Emma woke early on her day off. She’d been missing horseback riding and her handsome bay gelding, Cash. When she moved here she hadn’t been able to take him with her. Emma had been riding since before she could walk as her grandmother held her while going for trail rides. She starting competing at a young age but wasn’t a competitive person in nature. She’d had Cash since she was 12. He was now close to competition retirement age for serious competitors, but Emma would love him forever.
Emma had heard of a couple of different stables in town; one of the reasons she thought Breckenwood would be a good place to start over. She’d heard Sweetridge was a more laid-back sort of barn, full of friendly people and a happy atmosphere. She loved that idea. She’d competed in high school both on and off her high school rodeo team but she wasn’t looking for a strict competitive aura. She wanted to find a place she could enjoy riding and just be her happy-go-lucky self.
For these reasons, Emma had wanted to take a trip to Sweetridge, deciding to take the plunge and at least check things out and see what all the happy fuss was about. She slipped on her Rios of Mercedes boots she used for riding, a pair of blue jeans, her lucky plaid shirt, and her favorite black leather jacket before heading out.
She pulled up in her 2022 red Tacoma truck and parked. Stepping out, Emma took in a deep breathe of fresh air, smelling all the scents that reminded her of her grandparents’ ranch back home. She loved every good and bad scent that hit her nose, bringing years of riding and spending days at the barn to the forefront of her mind. She closed her truck door and started to casually walk around, stopping here and there as she nervously glanced around. Everything seemed nice but she wasn’t really sure what all was what and she hoped she’d bump into someone friendly and not get in trouble for walking around just looking. She wasn’t sure where the office would be or if they even had an official office (many barns back home had the office inside the barn or just did their paperwork at the main house and not near the actual barn or arena areas.
Emma walked until she found a place she knew she recognized: the barn. She breathed a sigh of semi-relief. At least she knew a barn when she saw one but she also didn’t know these horses or what Sweetridge would find acceptable. So she cautiously stepped foot into the barn. She paused at each stall, not wanting to agitate an unfriendly horse, she kept her distance but smiled and spoke softly to each horse in turn, enjoying the joy that comes from just being in the same space as these beautiful creatures. She took her sweet time as she enjoyed the barn and horses there.
