Welcome !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

Welcome to Breckenwood, a quaint little bayside town proud of its heritage and traditions. The town came to fame through its equestrian community, centered around Whittemore Estate: an elite facility built with the competitive rider in mind. The stables founder, John Whittemore, led the stables to victory at many competitions both locally and nationally. In present day, it seems like almost everyone in town seems to be connected to horses to some degree.

Breckenwood is a no-word count, no activity check, casual RP forum created with the busy individual in mind. We strive to maintain a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, welcome to players of all skill levels and backgrounds.

If you're new around here, you can find everything you'll need to know right here and in the tabs to the left!

Our Story !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

Our current plot on Breckenwood! Don't worry, we're a brand new site so you haven't missed anything yet! To find out what's currently going on, read below.

How It Started

When John passed away, he had willed his estate, the riding school, and all his assets to be split between his two children. Charles, the oldest, was much like his father. He envisioned a bright future and above all else values pride and passion for competition and being the best. The younger sibling however, did not agree. They instead wanted to open the facility up to the masses, welcoming any and all to the wonderful world of horses and to encourage every path...not just endless drills to achieve perfection. Realizing that Charles would never agree, the younger sibling sold their shares and instead bought a sizeable piece of property on the other side of town. Thus Sweetridge Farms was established and the rivalry between the two began.

How It's Going

It's been two years since John passed away, and tensions are high between the two stables, driven by the intense emotions between the two siblings. Charles, ever the same, pushes his staff and clients to prove themselves both in and out of the show ring. On the other hand, the younger sibling at Sweetridge encourages their staff and clients to just have fun. Welcoming all levels and disciplines and overall a much more relaxed atmosphere. Some riders left Whittemore for Sweetridge, craving a relief from the pressure. This only increased the animosity between the two. Now it's the start of a new show season and things are worse than ever with riders on both sides openly sabotaging the other, or worse.

About the Stables !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

All about the two main stables here in Breckenwood. You'll need to pick a place to board your horse, or horses, and a place for your character to call home. Choose wisely, the rivalry between them means it may not be as easy to switch sides once you've settled in.

Whittemore Estate

Owned by: Charles Whittemore
Whittemore is nestled in the hills to the east of the town, no more than a fifteen minute drive from downtown. Whittemore boasts a luxurious stables with every comfort a horse or rider could possibly want, Olympic sized arenas, both indoor and outdoor, and a full state of the art cross-country course. While still making sure to keep much of its historic features, the entire facility has been remodeled to suit modern technology. The stables and grounds are meticulously maintained and anyone who calls it home would want for nothing.

Charles keeps a tight rein on the stables, making sure that every need is taken care of right away. He's extremely driven and passionate about having the best facility with top trainers, world class horses, and the best staff around. He encourages his clients to follow his ambitions. The atmosphere at the stables is one that is highly competitive so if your goals are to ride for leisure, you may struggle to find friends. If, however, you are hardworking, have high standards, can take the high intensity, and have the desire to win it all, you'll feel right at home here.

Sweetridge Farms

Owned by: Derrick Whittemore
Sweetridge Farms is built up against the woods on the west side of town roughly a thirty minute drive from downtown. While not as large or grand as Whittemore, Sweetridge is still a professional, well-kept facility. A large barn with all the modern comforts, spacious arenas both indoor and outdoor, as well as ample pastures full of lush grass. Sweetridge also has access to an endless expanse of trails, all carved out through the woods and maintained regularly.

The atmosphere at the stables is warm and inviting, the owner always able to be found somewhere on the property whether they're helping someone in the arenas, supervising a younger student, or giving tours of the stables to prospective clients. The clients seem to be at ease and happy to be there as only some of them are of the competitive mindset while others are just there to enjoy the company of their horses. Overall, Sweetridge is a pleasant place to be if you love anything and everything horse related and anyone would feel welcome and right at home here.

Skill System !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

An in depth explanation about the skills for your horses on Breckenwood. The skill system is OPTIONAL for you, but highly encouraged since it adds just a little bit more to the roleplay.

Overview

There are currently 7 skills you can train for: Balance, Strength, Flexibility, Bascule, Stamina, Intelligence, and Speed. Each riding discipline uses a different combination of these skills for our showing system so you'll want to consider applying any skill points you have or earn towards the skills relevant to your horses discipline. The disciplines and their skills are:

Dressage: Balance, Intelligence, Flexibility
Cross Country: Strength, Bascule, Stamina
Show Jumping: Bascule, Speed, Strength
Equitation: Intelligence, Balance, Strength
Endurance: Stamina, Strength, Intelligence
Barrel Racing: Speed, Flexibility, Balance
Reining: Speed, Balance, Strength

Each horse you create starts out with 2 points in each skill. They also get 5 points for you to distribute into any of the skills you'd like. So if your horse was trained in Dressage, you could put all 5 points in Balance, or you could put 2 into Balance, 2 into Intelligence, and 1 into Flexibility. Or in any other combination.

Earning Skill Points

There are currently three ways you can earn additional skill points to use to max out their skills and increase their showing level:

Training Your Horse +1
Hiring a Trainer or Taking a Lesson +2
Participating in a Show +3

All of these are done through roleplay. To train your horse, you need to post either a stand-alone thread or a thread with another character specifically for training your horse in its riding discipline. You can also hire a trainer or take a lesson. The current active trainers are listed in the Administration thread in the Office for your stable and they are available for you to request that they train your horse. Or you can participate in our monthly lesson threads that the head trainer will post. Lastly you can participate in a show and will earn the points, regardless of whether you place or not.

Once you've earned your new skill points, don't forget to update the horse registry with their new skill point allocations. The staff use them when calculating show results so make sure that they're up to date and accurate so your score can be correctly calculated.

*Please note that ALL skills currently have a cap of 10 points maximum. Once a skill has 10 points, no more points can be applied.

Leveling Up

The number of combined skill points your horse has in its discipline will determine what level your horse is showing at. The levels for all single disciplines are currently:

Novice - 0-14 combined skill points
Intermediate - 15-19 combined skill points
Advanced - 20-25 combined skill points
Grand Prix - 26-30 combined skill points

Example requirements to advance between levels:
Novice to Intermediate - Enter 1 show and post 1 training post to earn +4 points.
Intermediate to Advanced - Enter 1 show and post 2 training posts to earn +5 points.
Advanced to Grand Prix - Enter 1 show and post 3 training posts to earn +6 points.

You of course are welcome to earn points however you see fit as showing is not mandatory. If you would prefer to advance levels through training alone, that's totally fine! The above example is just the way with the fewest role play posts.

3-Day Eventing

Because Eventing uses all seven skills, the rules for the discipline are a little different than the single disciplines so that it remains fair to all players.

Earning points for Eventers is slightly different than single disciplines. The three ways you can currently earn skills are as follows:

Training Your Horse +1
Hiring a Trainer or Taking a Lesson +2 (per lesson with a max of +6 if you take a lesson in all three disciplines)
Participating in a Show +9

The number of combined skill points your horse has in its discipline will determine what level your horse is showing at. The levels for Eventing horses are:

Novice - 0-29 combined skill points
Intermediate - 30-42 combined skill points
Advanced - 43-58 combined skill points
Grand Prix - 59-70 combined skill points

Example requirements to advance between levels:
Novice to Intermediate - Enter 1 show and take 1 lesson in any relevant discipline to earn +11 points.
Intermediate to Advanced - Enter 1 show and take 2 lessons in any relevant disciplines to earn +13 points.
Advanced to Grand Prix - Enter 1 show and take all 3 lessons for each discipline to earn +15 points.

You of course are welcome to earn points however you see fit as showing is not mandatory. If you would prefer to advance levels through training alone, that's totally fine! The above example is just the way with the fewest role play posts.

Showing !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

A few times a year we host shows for your characters to participate in and have some fun! If showing is something you're interested in, continue reading for all the dirty details on how showing works here.

Shows are mainly hosted to serve our plot where both stables are in a heated rivalry where they lay it all out during competition to prove once and for all who is the best of the best.

Placing in a show will earn you and your horse points towards our seasonal leaderboards. At the end of the season, the top 5 riders and top 5 horses will win special prizes! There are two leaderboards: one for the individual rider and horse, and one for the combined points earned by riders and horses at either of the stables. The winning stable will also win special prizes that will be given out to all riders from that stable who participated in the show season.

*How scoring is calculated may be subject to change if it is determined to be unfair to competitors.

Registering For A Show

In order to participate in a show, both horse and rider must register for the show. If the rider owns the horse they are entering, they may post once to register both. If the rider does NOT own the horse they are entering, in addition to their rider registration, the owner must either register the horse themselves, or the rider must link proof of consent from the owner to enter the horse.

Registration for each show will be open for one month beginning the day the show is first posted. After registering, members are welcome to roleplay their warmup or other show related activities. Once registration closes, the results will be rolled and announced. Members then have three months to roleplay their show entry.

Scoring Overview

All show results will be calculated per the following: skill 1 + skill 2 + skill 3 + a weighted random factor (fault) = total score. The random factor is between 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, or 1-10 depending on your skill point total against the minimum base score.

Please note that there is a skill cap of 10 per skill and a max possible of 30 combined points for your discipline.

We use a minimum "base score" to determine the fate of your round. You must meet the minimum base score to be considered clear, or no faults/deductions. The level your horse is competing at will determine what the base score is. The levels and their corresponding base scores are as follows:

Novice - 14 (max possible of 11 from skills, need 3-6 on dice roll for clear)
Intermediate - 23 (max possible of 19 from skills, need 4-6 on dice roll for clear)
Advanced - 30 (max possible 25 from skills, need 5-6 on dice roll for clear)
Grand Prix - 35 (max possible 30 from skills, need 5-6 on dice roll for clear)

Dressage

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If the gap is -3 or greater, the rider/horse will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it will be considered a fault.

For all riders who go clear, the winners are determined from highest score to lowest. If two riders share the same score, they will share the placement.

Cross Country

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If -3 or greater, the pair will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it is a refusal. The exact difference equates to how many times the horse refused.

All riders who ride clear in Cross Country will be re-rolled with an additional random factor of 1-3. Only Strength and Stamina will count towards the re-roll. Winners will be determined from highest to lowest score.

Show Jumping

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If -3 or greater, the pair will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it is a knocked rail or refusal. The exact difference equates to how many rails were knocked or how many times the horse refused.

For jumping, everyone who has a clear round goes to the jump off. Only speed and bascule will count towards the jump off. The jump off will have another random factor 1-3. The winners of the jump off will be order of highest to lowest score.

Equitation

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If the gap is -3 or greater, the rider/horse will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it will be considered a fault.

For all riders who go clear, the winners are determined from highest score to lowest. If two riders share the same score, they will share the placement.

Endurance

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If -3 or greater, the rider will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it is a time penalty. The exact difference equates to how many hours over the optimum time the pair finished.

For all clear rounds, winners are determined from highest score to lowest. If two riders share a score, they will share a placement.

Barrel Racing

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If -3 or greater, it will be a rider fall. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it is a knocked barrel. The exact difference equates to how many barrels the horse knocked over.

For all riders who go clear, they will be re-rolled with an additional random factor of 1-3. Only Speed and Balance will count towards the re-roll. Winners are determined from highest to lowest score.

Reining

If the minimum base score is not met, the gap between the total score and the minimum requirement is used to determine the outcome. If the gap is -3 or greater, the rider/horse will be eliminated. If the gap is -2 or fewer, it will be considered a fault.

For all riders who go clear, the winners are determined from highest score to lowest. If two riders share the same score, they will share the placement.

3-Day Eventing

Because Evening is a combination of three different disciplines that all use different skills, the specifics for Eventing are a little different. Each day will be scored per the individual discipline with the random factor. All of these scores will then be added up for a grand total score. Winners will be from highest to lowest score.
*We might implement a base score minimum and fault gap but as the skill distribution between all three disciplines might be wildly different between horses, we'll have to see how it goes in practice.

The Leaderboard

Placing first, second, or third in a show will earn you, and your stable, points towards our leaderboard! The riders, and their horses, at the end of the show season with the most points will win special prizes! The stable with the most combined points will also win special prizes, and will show the other stable who's best. Points are distributed as follows:

1st 8 points
2nd 6 points
3rd 4 points

Monetary System !
A Subtitle for Your Viewing Pleasure

We use a monetary system here on Breckenwood. It's very minor and isn't meant to play a major role in gameplay, more just to add a little bit of extra depth and immersion for players! This is an overview of how it works.

Earning Money

New characters automatically will receive 5,000 monies upon completing their character application. They can continue to earn monies by just posting in any of our roleplay boards at a rate of +100 for new threads, and +50 for each reply to an existing thread.

If employed, characters can earn a weekly wage of +200 by roleplaying them working at their job. The amount is uniform for all jobs and can only be collected once per week. If you post more than one working thread per week, you can only earn monies for one post.

Characters can also make money from other players by selling horses if they own any, or through breeding their horses.

Spending Money

All spending happens in character. We do not have a rewards shop at this time. Currently characters can spend money through either buying horses in the classifieds, or breeding their horse.
