Zoey sighed in relief when she got to the barn that afternoon. Maybe it was because of the upcoming show that had everyone running around so much because the tavern had been busier than normal. Nothing too crazy had happened, and most of her customer had been appropriately polite, but she estimated she had put in at least 20,000 steps a day every day she had worked. Being so excited for her weekend plans with April she'd been worried that the week was going to drag horribly while she waited, but being so busy had made the week fly by. She hadn't even had trouble sleeping, being so exhausted in the evenings when she finally got home that she'd gone straight to bed and passed out easily.
Entering the stables, she didn't immediately see April but that was fine. Her horse was kept on almost the opposite end of the barn. She moved to Summer's stall and greeted the mare with a smile and a friendly hello. It was returned with perked ears and a nicker, the mare stepping forward through the shavings to poke her nose against the bars of the stall. "Hey girl," she told the horse. Grabbing her halter and leadrope, Zoey slid the door open and entered the box. Summer obediently put her nose into the halter and followed Zoey to the wash rack. Without much fuss, Zoey clipped her into the crossties and began the process of getting her ready for their ride.
While she hadn't been entirely clear on whether or not she was even allowed to ride Summer outside of her lessons, Derrick had assured her that because there weren't any scheduling conflicts that she was welcome to take her on a hack today. Just as long as she was extra careful and didn't do anything reckless while out on the trails. Zoey had promised she would be on her best behaviour and hoped that if things went well today that Derrick would be open to letting her do it more often. She would probably have to keep asking, at least until she saved up enough to either buy her own horse or get a better job and could maybe afford to lease Summer instead. She really did love the little bay mare.
Going over the mare thoroughly with the grooming tools, Zoey made sure that every inch of the mare was spotless and shining. Her feet were picked and the wash racks were swept and returned to their pristine condition. Or as pristine as they could be anyway. There was a certain amount of dirt and grime that was inevitable when it came to horses she'd come to learn. She had heard things about the other stables in town, Whittemore, and how clean and shiny the stables there were kept. She did not want to know how hard the staff there had to work to keep it so tidy and once again was happy that she had decided to take up riding at Sweetridge instead.
Once Zoey had finished grooming Summer, she tacked her up. Saddle blanket first, then saddle, and finally the cinch. She still needed some practice there but after April had shown her what to do last week, she felt a lot more confident about doing it correctly. Lastly, Zoey put on Summer's brushing boots and bridle and then finally they were ready to go. "C'mon girl," she told the horse while leading her from the wash bay. She decided to hand graze the horse a little out on the lawn while she waited for April to get ready with Majesty.
